Chapter Twenty
September 28th
09:00
It had been just under forty-eight hours since Sergei had last heard from his team, but that was nothing unusual. They had not set up regimented check-in points. The matter remained fluid, it had to, until they picked up the second target and found the right opportunity. These things could be over in minutes, or it could take days.
But it was forty-eight hours since the primary elimination had been successful, and the secondary target picked up. Maybe he was getting more impatient in older years.
He paced the apartment but thought the better of it and headed to the kitchenette to brew up a coffee. The small tv mounted on a wall bracket was on but the volume off. Kettle on and cafetière loaded, he waited for the water to boil and watched the tv absentmindedly as the kitchenette filled with the noise of the kettle.
A weather girl stood in front of a large screen showing the eastern Mediterranean, smiling the perfect smile. Her arms moved in slow graceful movements, apparently showing an unusual weather front passing down from the Adriatic towards Cyprus and into Crete.
The image changed and it showed weather and temperatures for the next three days across the Eastern Med. Mixed showers and windy by the look of it.
Kettle boiled, he filled the cafetière and set the plunger to work. The image on the tv changed again to a young but serious looking young male presenter. Behind him a stock image of police standing behind cordon tape loomed large.
He checked his cellphone again but there was no traffic. All quiet.
Live footage appeared on the screen and a female reported was animated in front of a café, cordoned off by the police. Police vehicles and paramedics and outriders were parked around the frontage. He recognised the café.
The remote control was on top of the fridge, and he grabbed it to flip off the mute.
His Greek was good.
âA man, unknown nationality, in his mid-forties has died in the café behind me here in Zik Zok in the old town, popular with tourists and only metres from the Grand Mosque. The police are treating it as suspicious. No further details are available at this time.â
Strange.
The elimination was to be subtle, keep them guessing for days until detailed forensics could be carried out. How come the police were making a song and dance about this so quickly?
âBut we can hand over to my colleague, Christos near Market Square on Kanari to report on another assault and homicide.â
âThank you, Eleni. This is what we know. The police were called to the Aroma café today after a disturbance in the alley behind me hereâ
The cameraman zoomed into a dark looking alley to the side of a café now also devoid of customers and cordoned in blue and white tape, before panning back to the reporter.
âPolice have confirmed that two men were found of indeterminate age or nationality. Police sources have said that one was found dead at the scene.â The reporter referred to notes before looking back at the camera.
